Bouguereau Paints en Plein Air

William Adolphe Bouguereau, known for his wonderful draftsmanship and paint handling when portraying a studio model, was not immune to the lure of painting en plein air.  Though his finished paintings tend not to show the effects of natural outdoor lighting, it is obvious that he was capable of producing wonderful landscape studies from life.  These two paintings show how talented an observer he was, and, had he chosen to pursue landscape painting, give a glimpse at what this extremely talented artist may have produced.

Sakievich-

I belong to an online group called Rational Painting, and these paintings by Bouguereau were added to the site's gallery by the site administer, Dave Corcoran. The members there have gone to great lengths to see many wonderful paintings in person. Often they will also post close-ups of the paintings they can get to. The site is a wonderful resource.

I have linked larger image files to the two in the post.

Bouguereau was one hell of a painter and even though I find some of his subject matter a bit much, I still marvel at this mans ability with oil paint.

Bouguereau has been the subject of my affection for a long time while in art school and out of it. I attempted a couple copies/studies of his work recently, and just the two that I have done have made an amazing difference in my paint handling. These plein airs are stunning and its really nice to see some of his non genre or mythological subject matter. Wonderful post.
