Thanks for the post.
Peter Adams , the President of the California Art Club , and I studied together. I remember when he relaunched the CAC. It used to be more plein air and now there is a generous mix of finished studio pieces as well as Plein Air. I guess its time to Join.
My votes go to...Ray Roberts , Dennis Doheny ( stud) , Mian Situ ( super art stud...his painting at the Autry went for $350,00 ) and local up and coming chick stud ( she lives near me ) Candice Bohannon ( not yet 25 )
Thats $350,000
Not to be outdone Howard Terpning sold his entry for 1.2 million . No recession affecting these artists.
I like the Ray Roberts piece as well... it almost ended up on the post. Main Situ is always brilliant, and I like the Doheny piece too. There are quite a few nice landscapes... I'm just happy to see what everyone out there is creating.
You definitely should join!
Terpning is a superstar. I don't even think of him as an artist anymore. He's an alchemist who turns canvas into gold. At this point, he can paint anything, and it will sell for more than the last piece did. I doubt he even pays attention anymore to the prices; he's found his niche, and he just keeps painting.
For a lot of people, art has become the investment of choice. I've been pleasantly surprised by some of the sales I've seen in NYC (of course, it's not that good across the board). Wealthy Russians are buying up real estate and art because tangible investments feel safer to them, considering their country's history and their insecurity that the money will keep coming in. Art will usually keep increasing in value (though for some pieces, it takes a while to get back up on top- Bouguereau, Alma-Tadema, Inness, etc..
Main Situ was unknown for me. I've checked out his website and must say he is really brilliant. I specially like his multifigure paintings, normally the weakness of modern painters.
Main Situ, Dennis Doheny are the ones that make it for me.
Sorry, I'm not really into Terpning. It's well done and he's good at what he does, but Cowboy and Indian art is not to my taste.
The whole issues of corn comes into play with this kind of painting. Maybe it's a western thing. However the last time I was in Arizona I did not see any cowboys rounding up anything.
It's going to be another great show alright!!
I volunteered at the take-in and .... WOW!!! Got to see so many beautiful pieces as their creators brought them in..
Check out Jove Wang's too... but I have no idea HOW you can choose among them... just gorgeous.
