I received my copy of the Heritage Illustration Art Auction catalog yesterday, and this sale from the estate of Charles Martignette is nothing short of amazing. The collection that Mr. Martignette amassed beginning in the 1970's was ahead of its time, and represents an incredible range of artists from the Golden Age through the Pulps and right on up to the illustrators of the present.
The wonderful aspect of Heritage Galleries is that, in addition to running floor auctions, they run simultaneous online auctions, meaning that every lot in their sale is represented on their website with very large, clear images. It takes a while to go through all the images but it's worth the trip.

Boy, do I wish I had money.
It's all the more galling in that, when he bought the stuff, it was almost as though people would pay him to cart it away.....
I'm actually shocked by how low the estimates are! I guess it's the economy.
I still dream of walking into a yard sale and getting an original illustration for five bucks...
Yard sale finds are still possible, although ebay seems to be the new yard sale--sometimes you can find killer pieces by the old greats at regular smaller auctions. I was able to pull out a pretty killer Dean Cornwell about 5 years ago now of a mounty, the top portion of the illustration was gone and it was not lined and not framed but I was able to sneak it out at just over the low estimate. I hate it that now might be the time to buy, sounds great but you still have to have the money--rats!
