On the final day of the conference, after presentations by Mary Whyte, and Gold Medal Recipient, John Howard Sanden, and after the Closing Ceremonies concluded, many attendees boarded buses and departed for the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC. This year, the visit to the museum was especially rewarding for members of the Portrait Society, as we were able to attend the display of faculty member Rose Frantzen's project, Portrait of Maquoketa. Frantzen's 180 alla prima paintings of her fellow Iowan townspeople are part of the exhibit, Portraiture Now: Communities, on display until July 5th of this year.

After seeing Frantzen's work, PSA members visited some of their favorite paintings in the museum's permanent collection.

I often steal away to the National Gallery to visit those exact paintings . . . Did you see the Sargent portrait of Henry Cabot Lodge? The hands are exquisite . . . http://www.npg.si.edu/exh/brush/lodge.htm -sarah
