The Sargent Notes

More than a year ago, Putney Painter Andrea Scheidler was trolling through ebay looking for good deals on used art books when she happened upon an interesting collection of notes up for bid. She took a small chance, and purchased a copy of the Collected Notes on the Painting Methods of John Singer Sargent, and what she received exceeded her expectations. Soon Schiedler and other artists in her group, the High Street Painters, were referencing the notes regularly, and referring to the sheaf exaltedly as The Book of Juan, not after the subject, Mr. Sargent, but after the author, Juan Jr. Ramirez.

This young man, Ramirez, spent four years compiling his notes from information he gathered in books on Sargent, and from direct observation of Sargent's work in public displays. He had begun painting in oils when he was 18, in his small Chicago bedroom, while his peers fought gang battles outside his window. Painting was his refuge and his obsession, and when he found there were not the resources to study the type of art he wished to learn, he took it upon himself to absorb as much as he could from John Singer Sargent, the painter he held in esteem above all others. The notes he assembled are not a scholarly work on Sargent, but rather a collection of student notes, organized around bullet points for the ease of Juan's own study, and for study by any other artist seeking to learn more about Sargent's methods.

Since releasing his notes on ebay, Ramirez, as an artist, has come to the attention of many other working professionals. In his early twenties, Juan has already been invited to paint alongside Richard Schmid and the Putney Painters, has had his first one man show, and has been a repeated guest of Andrea Scheidler and the High Street Painters in Brattleboro, Vermont. His notes are used regularly by artist and teacher Dennis Sheehan in Sheehan's own classroom, and Juan has begun to field inquiries about offering his own workshops.

The Collected Notes on the Painting Methods of John Singer Sargent are now available on ebay for $20.00 USD. They are currently in their second printing after having been edited by Ms. Scheidler, who sought to keep the flavor of Juan's passionate search for understanding while trying to make clear any portions of the text befuddled by the author's self-proclaimed first language, "Spanglish." They comprise 35 pages of notes covering paint lay-in, color, value, drawing, edges, and procedure, all printed on high quality paper.

Yes, I ran into the same problem when I went to ebay - the listing for this title has ended :(
Is it available anywhere else?

Thanks very much!

I am currently mailing the NOTES for Juan and that is why we took them down for a week while I was out of town. 50 copies will be back up on eBay in the next day or so and the next mass mailing will be in 2 weeks. The notes are 3 hole punched so you can add illustrations and notes of your own.
I use them all the time and the short sentences stick in my head.
So, sorry for the delay but do look on eBay Friday and they should be there. Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm, Matt. I think Juan has done such a good thing here by compiling his readings and ideas. He is very dedicated and has made himself into a remarkable artist by working to master skills of the Masters!

Email to Andrea Scheidler:

Andrea,
Today Matthew D. Innis"s Underpaintings blog post gave an ebay link to your edited version of The Collected Notes on the Painting Methods of John Singer Sargent by Juan Jr Ramirez, which has since been removed. Do you have this available somewhere else for purchased?

Thank You,
William

REPONSE: It is down because I am on the road and can not ship them out for Juan. We will re list them at the end of next week. My next shipping date will be June 3rd
.Sorry for the inconvenience.

Don't wish to be a partybreaker, but being interested in Sargent's writings, I'd like to know if those notes are the same ones that are already downloadable. I know two sites (which I won't mention here) that offer free download of John Collier's writings on Sargent methods. (Collier was writing his book on the art of portrait painting and asked Sargent for an account of his methods, which he later quoted in that book. In addition, two of Sargent's pupils contributed their own observations based on watching Sargent paint.)

Hey Valentino! I'm not sure if Juan referenced those sources or not (he probably did). They are not listed in the bibliography, but Juan admits that the bibliography is incomplete.

I'm sure if other people were willing to put in the same amount of leg-work as Juan, they could compile a similar set of notes over time. Juan just made it easier, by putting it together, and then he added in his own personal analysis of the painting method to boot. I think the latter part has a lot to do with the flickr set of JSS close-ups that Juan has started.

Maybe Juan can respond too?

Matt

Hi Valentino!

You are right valentino! i did list those references. after all these are notes based on them. its true i did add things here and there after having an understanding of his technique. those sites which you can list are free. in fact i included them in the notes. you might say whats the point then? well in fact the only point that came to my mind when i wrote the notes, was how can i make all that scattered information make sense to me and pluck out all the pointless info. the notes contained far more than those two sources combined. they also have information found in other books from other sources which i list too. they are organize in a way which artist tend to think and enjoy as well. it also covers some of durans technique. it really depends on your level of technique, if you have studied for years then most of it might seem regurgitation. but sargent advocated to always practice the fundamentals. but if you are a beginner then its a treasure trove as many thought it to be. if you get the chance to see them look them over and you'll see how completely different they look. but most of all they helped me paint with great confidence and technique. My portraits are pretty good, not the best. but if i got where am at in 4 years time, i can only imagine how will my portraits be in 10 years when im 33. if you have any more questions please email me at kruzito_357@yahoo.com
