A Visit to the 2010 American Masters Show SCNY

Peoples' Choice Winner- Overture to Twilight by Curt Walters

Last Friday, I had the wonderful opportunity to be present for the opening reception of the American Masters Show and Sale at the Salmagundi Club in New York City. It was a large gathering, filled with distinguished collectors and artists alike. Among those present were David Kassan, Kevin McEvoy, John Smith, Rosemary Ladd, John Potter, Kathy Anderson, Josh Elliott, John Traynor, Curt Walters, David Leffel, Don Demers, Steve Doherty, Kimberly Moore, Nancy Guzik, Richard Schmid, and countless others I no doubt missed in the crowd. Because of the nature of the sale during the gala (it was not an auction; sale prices were set and prospective buyers were chosen by lottery), the atmosphere remained relaxed and social despite brisk sales. According to Tim Newton, curator of the show, the event had raised $200,000 by Saturday afternoon, and there were still nine days left for additional sales. All profits from those sales went directly to the Salmagundi Club's Gallery Renovation Fund. If you should get the chance to be in the area of Greenwich Village and the Club, make sure to stop in at this New York institution and see how this beautiful brownstone is being preserved by and for the art community.

Jazz music played for most of the evening

Tickets indicating an "Intent to Purchase" are placed in the boxes stationed near each piece of art. A ticket is drawn at random, and that person has the option to buy the work at the set price, or decline, allowing the second name drawn the same choice.

For sale, in a recently renovated room on the second floor of the Club, were a collection of drawings by Richard Schmid. Many of these drawings were created specifically for Schmid's latest book The Landscapes, and their availability aroused the interest of many collectors.

That last painting by Timothy Thies is very nice. It should also be noted that he recently passed away in April.

RIP Timothy Thies.

Thanks , so much for your posts---I'm so saddened by the passing of Timothy Theis--a wonderfully sensitive painter--would love to see more of John Taft's work
