Phillustration 2010

Closing today at the Philadelphia Sketch Club was the show, Phillustration 2010, the third annual Open Juried Exhibition of Illustration. Each year the show has attracted more and more participants from throughout the region, including, this year, such familiar artists as Boris Vallejo, Julie Bell, David Palumbo, and Charles Santore. Work in the show had to have been created within the past five years, and must not have been previously exhibited at the club. Awards were given in the categories of Advertising, Editorial, Book, Self-Promotion/Un-commissioned, and Student Work. It is but one of the events organized each year by the Sketch Club in order to foster a greater sense of community among artists.

The club itself is the oldest continuously operating organization of its kind in America. Founded in 1860 by six students from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts who were seeking opportunities not available at their school, the club has grown to boast a prestigious roster of associates. Among those members, past and present, are Thomas Eakins, Thomas Anshutz, A.B. Frost, N.C. Wyeth, Howard Chandler Christy, Henry Pitz, Edward Redfield, Maxfield Parrish, Daniel Garber, Daniel Ridgway Knight, Earl Shinn, John Sloan, John Ennis, Joseph DeVito, Gerald Simcoe, Alexandra Tyng, and Garth Herrick. In matching the historical significance of its membership, the Club's permanent space is located in Philadelphia's historic Washington Square West District, in a set of three brick row-houses built in the early 1820s which were conjoined in 1915 to create a single facility. There are many benefits to becoming a part of the lineage of this important group, and artists and art lovers are still welcome to join.

Matt- Do you know the dates of the rehanging of the show? I'd like to update the post so maybe people who were unaware of the event can get a chance to see the exhibit.

Congrats, by the way; I heard you grabbed prizes in a couple of categories.

Brilliant work!

Matt

Thanks-I was very lucky. There's are a lot of great pieces in the show.

I don't know when the show is going to be down, but I'm pretty sure it's not more than a few days. Then it will stay up through July 16th.

Matt, Thank you for posting this information. The Philadelphia Sketch Club has done a terrific job for years presenting interesting dynamic exhibitions. The Small Oils show is always very popular as well and I think 150 years running. The list of artists that have shown in that is amazing. The illustrators show is really very cool and the winners this year were top flight! It was an honor to be part of the show.
