Tony Pro of California has only been painting seriously for little over a decade, but he has already made a significant impact in the art world. Born into an artistic family, Pro, with the encouragement of his father Julio, sought instruction at the California Art Institute, where he learned the time-honored skills passed down from famous instructor Frank Reilly through the school's founder Fred Fixler, and which have made of a remarkable number of students, highly successful artists. His award-winning paintings can be found in both private and public hands, including the collections of the museum of the San Antonio Missions National Historic Park, and of the Capitol Building of the State of California.
In this painting, Pro decided to paint a model who makes unique and exotic clothing. He had found a picture of the young, British model accoutered in a feathered collar in her professional portfolio, and had her sit for him wearing the same, unusual costume piece. The design of the collar, and the way it shaped the model's pose, gave the sitter a sense of regality which Pro captured in this alla-prima portrait.
In an effort to pass on the artistic lineage of which he is a part, Pro also teaches, both through workshops and taped demonstrations. His DVD, The Portrait Sketch with Tony Pro, has been popular worldwide, and his presentations through his internet education service, the Zarolla Online Art Academy, have made his instruction easily accessible to everyone.
