I don't want to sound like the mean grouchy one, but as I said it on Facebook already, I think this one by the great Lipking is too much inspired by a wonderful Luigi Nono painting at Orsay. Same profile and movement, same dress color and light dots pattern, same umbrella, large mountains masses in the background, red dots around the cross, flowers in the foreground... and should I say, exact same theme (the original title is "first rain"/"première pluie").
I'm usually fond of Lipking's masterful work, but - sorry - this one doesn't convince me, either as an homage (I've never seen Luigie Nono's name mentionned anywhere), or as an original painting.
I don't think seeing the many similarities makes the new painting look good, as the woman and background are much stiffer and less natural looking.
@Armel- I wouldn't focus too much on the similarities with the Nono painting. I agree that Jeremy was probably inspired by the piece you linked; when I saw Jeremy's painting, I immediately thought of the Nono painting (though I could only remember the image, and not the painter's name). The funerary theme was very popular at the end of the 19th century- Jeremy is also very fond of Friant who explored that subject in several paintings as well. Nono's painting has a greater sense of depth, and Jeremy's a bolder sense of design. The costuming, environment, etc., work for me as taking place in Mexico or the South West. As for the dress, they are oddly similar; odd because that particular dress has appeared in Jeremy's paintings for at least the past 6 years. I wouldn't get too worked up over it; there are as many differences between the two paintings as there are similarities.
