In 2009, Sadie Valeri, Diane Feissel, and Alia El-Bermani, three artists who had by then not all yet met face-to-face, together developed the Women Painting Women blog. Their site, which celebrates paintings of women done by contemporary female, realist artists, quickly became very popular, and by 2010, the quality of the work showcased on the blog was so impressive, that Robert Lange Studios in Charleston, South Carolina offered to host an exhibit of paintings from the site.
While that show, Women Painting Women - A Group Invitational, was on view, the founders of the blog, and a few of their peers, decided to meet in South Carolina, and spend a week together painting on Sullivan Island. During those seven days, friendships were formed and strengthened, and through those bonds, the women found the inspiration to create many new and challenging works.
Now, a year-and-a-half later, the women who participated in that retreat have come together for another show, Women Painting Women - The Expedition and Beyond. On view at the Principle Gallery in Virginia from April 13th until May 15th, the exhibition features works created by those 13 women, either created during their time together on Sullivan Island, or in the time since.
For those who can make it to see the show, Principle Gallery is located at 208 King Street, in Alexandria, Virginia, telephone number 703.739.9326. The opening will take place on April 13th, from 6:30 - 9:00 PM. For those who cannot attend The Expedition and Beyond, a catalog is also available, for $19.00: it can be ordered from the Matter Deep Publishing website.

I love their blog and all the talent that is there. I am so happy to learn a little bit more about them. How wonderful and inspiring. I did not know the history. Thank you for sharing!
Such beautiful art. Inspiring.
That piece by Kate Stone is pretty good......for a girl.
I live nearby and will definitely be attending. Can't wait!
@ David--You totally crack me up, lol. Good thing your wife is as tolerant as she is talented. ;)
Thank you for posting this Matthew!
Matt, many thanks to you for featuring our Expedition show. I appreciate the time and effort you put into Underpaintings. It's a great resource for artists and art lovers.
In all seriousness, Kate talks about that time in Charleston as one of her favorite memories. We are going to do our best to scrap and save so she can fly out to the next outing to paint, bake cookies, pillow fight, talk about boys, and do whatever else you gals do when you all get together.
This is really an informative blog. Thanks for sharing with us. Painting classes in delhi
