Auction-house, James D. Julia, Inc., of Fairfield, Maine, will be holding its large, three-day, Annual Winter Antique, Asian, & Fine Art Auction later this month, from January 29th through February 1st.  With over 1,800 objects available for purchase in this sale, perusing the catalog can be a bit daunting, but there is a large group of paintings going up for bid on the first day of the auction which are of especial interest, and are worth the time to examine.  These particular paintings are from the collection of the late John Gale of Cambridge, Massachusetts, a Vermont native, who amassed a large collection of New England landscapes during his lifetime.  Many of the more than 130 paintings up for offer from Gale's estate are quite nice, and include works by such notables from the Rockport/Gloucester School and the Cape Ann art colonies, as Frederick Mulhaupt, Aldro Hibbard, William Stevens, Emile Gruppé, John Carlson, and T.M. Nicholas.  For more information, please visit the James D. Julia website.

The auction will take place at Julia's facilities on Rt. 201 in Fairfield, Maine, beginning at 10:00 AM on each of the three sale days.  A free full-color brochure of the sale is available, as is a fully-illustrated catalog ($40.00).  A limited number of catalogs are also available via Julia's website;  just pay shipping (see the website for details, as some restrictions may apply).  Previews of the sale will be held from 9 AM - 5 PM on January 29th, from 8 AM until 10 AM during the period of January 30th through February 1st, and also during the auction sessions themselves.

This Saturday, February 12th, Julia’s will conduct a special viewing of the Gale Collection with a wine and cheese reception, from 2-6pm at the Rockport Art Association’s Hibbard Gallery, located at 12 Main Street in Rockport, Massachusetts. A presentation on Cape Ann art will be given by fine art consultant and Antiques Roadshow appraiser, Colleene Fesko. Please call Julia’s at 207-453-7125 to RSVP.

Thanks for sharing these. I'm a fan of Gruppe's brushwork and heavy use of paint. Having other similar artists to browse / see is great!
